Phnom Penh, una historia como pocas
Phnom Penh es una ciudad como muchas de las que hemos visto por el sudeste asiático, pero tiene una historia como pocas. Si bien sus vecinas Laos y Vietnam sufrieron ataques constantes de los estado unidenses, ellos sufrieron un genocidio causado ni más ni menos por un propio camboyano, Pol Pot (su nombre real era Saloth Sar), máximo lider del régimen comunista de los Jemeres Rojos, el partido político que gobernó la llamada Kampuchea Democrática de ideología maoísta entre 1975 y 1979.
Su consigna era empezar de nuevo, Camboya año cero, pero para ello debían borrar todo el pasado: moneda, mercado, educación, etc. Por lo que en estos años se prohibió la entrada de extranjeros al país. Durante este régimen "desparecieron" entre dos y tres millones de camboyanos.
Calaveras del museo
Instalaron salas de tortura en antiguas escuelas para así empezar la aniquilación sistemática de la oposición con sus familias y todos los que a los ojos del Estado eran declarados enemigos, como por ejemplo aquellos que fueran o parecieran intelectuales. Los “sospechosos” lo eran por razones tan sútiles como usar gafas, saber un idioma extranjero, tener un título universitario, haber trabajado en alguna oficina antes del 17 de abril de 1975 y otras cosas similares y eran exterminados junto con su familia y amigos. La sala de tortura más conocida se encuentra en esta ciudad, Tuol Slang, la "colina de la muerte", hoy conocida como "museo del genocidio", en ella entraron miles de personas, a las cuales no se sabía exactamente lo que se les hacía. Los camboyanos lo llamaban “konlaeng choul ot cheng” que significa “el sitio en donde se entra pero no se sale”. Y a ocho kilómetros se encontraban los campos de exterminio, "killing fields", donde exterminaban a todas estas personas después de caminar en condiciones infrahumanas desde las cárceles.

"Secuestrados"
Casi todos los países hicieron oídos sordos a este lamentable suceso, ya que a Estados Unidos, como no, le interesaba aislar a Vietnam durante la guerra fría. Solamente Australia, India y Nueva Zelanda lanzaron tímidas denuncias acalladas por el poder del veto de Estados Unidos en las Naciones Unidas. Solamente, en octubre de 1979, con la invasión vietnamita y el derrocamiento de Pol Pot, fue que empezó el lento y doloroso descubrimiento de la realidad de Camboya.
Manos
Fue recién en el 2006 que se creó un tribunal especial en Camboya, con la colaboración de la ONU para juzgar a todos los líderes sobrevivientes de los Jemeres Rojos y aún continúa hasta esta fecha.
